New Zealand 315 for 7 (Ryder 74, Guptill 66, Vettori 48) beat Sri Lanka 277 (Jayawardene 77, Kulasekara 57*) by 38 runs
The Black Caps revived their Champions Trophy campaign on Monday with a surprise 38-run win over Sri Lanka at the Wanderers Stadium in Johannesburg.Powered by half-centuries to Jesse Ryder (74) and Martin Guptill (66), and a typically innovative 48 to captain Daniel Vettori, the Black Caps made a mockery of Sri Lanka's decision to bowl first, racking up 314/8 in their 50 overs.
In reply the Sri Lankans rarely threatened, succumbing for 277 in the 47th over.
There were a few nervous moments as former captain Mahela Jayawardene (77) and Nuwan Kulasekara (56 not out) added 78 for the seventh wicket, but when Vettori clean bowled Jayawardene the match was all but over at 219 for 7.
Kyle Mills grabbed 3 for 69 from his 10 overs, while James Franklin enjoyed a successful comeback match, taking 2 for 40 to go with his 28 not out with the bat. Vettori and Daryl Tuffey took two wickets each.
The win was tempered somewhat by a tournament-ending leg injury to Ryder, who batted much of his innings with a runner and did not take the field.
The Black Caps are guaranteed a semi-final spot if they beat England in the final Group B match on Wednesday morning, while Sri Lanka are now effectively eliminated after entering the tournament as one of the favourites.
